Mount St. Joseph is Coaches Pick to Lead HCAC Volleyball Race

2013 Schedule

GREENWOOD, IN – The College of Mount St. Joseph volleyball team has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. In a poll of the ten HCAC head coaches, the Lions received a total of 88 points and four first place votes.

Transylvania University placed second in the poll with 81 points and five first place votes, while Defiance College is picked to finish third in the conference standings this fall with 77 points.  Hanover College (62 pts), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (60), Bluffton University (60), Anderson University (42), Manchester University (31), Franklin College (30), and Earlham College (19, one first place vote) round out the poll.

The Lions are coming off a 14-15 season and 8-1 conference record in 2012, claiming a share of the conference championship. Mount earned the HCAC tournament title over Transylvania and fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Washington-St. Louis.

Coach Bennett's Lions look to be a formidable opponent once again in a highly competitive HCAC.  Mount St. Joseph returns two All-HCAC selections to the lineup this fall.  Senior middle hitter Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) and senior outside hitter Bethani Ritter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) return to lead the Lions in a quest for a fourth straight league title.

Sherpensky saw action in 29 matches last year, recording a team-high 3.00 kills per set.  The senior also posted a team-best hitting percentage of .235 and 98 total blocks in 2012, while Ritter contributed 281 kills and a team-high 24 service aces.

Transylvania University finished alongside Mount St. Joseph at the top of the standings last season with an 8-1 conference mark and a 22-14 record overall.  The Pioneers will look to contend for their fourth straight conference title behind senior Meghan Bowers (Louisville, Ky./Presentation) and sophomore Sarah Jonas (Lowell, Ind./H.S.).  The duo earned All-HCAC honors last fall and will look for similar results in 2013.  Bowers led the HCAC with a hitting percentage of .334 and ranked among the conference leaders in kills (3.38 per set) and points (3.79 per set).  Jonas led the HCAC in assists as a freshman, averaging 9.35 per set.

Defiance College finished fourth in the league standings a year ago with a 6-3 conference record and held an overall mark of 18-13.  HCAC Coach of the Year Brie Brenner returns three All-HCAC players to the lineup this fall and will look to secure the school's first ever HCAC volleyball crown.  Junior setter Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich./H.S.) ranked second in the HCAC with 961 assists, while senior outside hitters Chelsea Ludeman (Napoleon, Ohio/H.S.) and Alexis Pierce (Wauseon, Ohio/H.S.) ranked among the conference leaders in hitting percentage and kills last fall.

The 2013 volleyball season is scheduled to open on August 30.
