Defiance College is Coaches Pick to Lead HCAC Volleyball Race

2014 Schedule

GREENWOOD, IN – The Defiance College volleyball team has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. In a poll of the ten HCAC head coaches, the Yellow Jackets received a total of 86 points and four first place votes.

Bluffton University placed second in the poll with 84 points and four first place votes, while Mount St. Joseph University is picked to finish third in the conference standings this fall with 82 points (one first place vote).  Transylvania University (72 pts), Hanover College (57), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (56, one first place vote), Franklin College (32), Anderson University (30), Manchester University (26), and Earlham College (21) round out the poll.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 23-6 season and 9-0 conference record in 2013, claiming the school's first ever HCAC championship. Defiance fell in the HCAC tournament semifinals to Hanover, ending its season.

Coach Brenner's Jackets look to be a formidable opponent once again in a highly competitive HCAC.  Defiance returns two All-HCAC selections to the lineup this fall.  Senior setter Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich./H.S.) and senior outside hitter Bree Anderson (Huntertown, Ind./Carroll) return to lead the Jackets in a quest for a second straight league title.

Kalik saw action in 29 matches last year, recording a team-high 10.12 assists per set.  The senior also posted 2.47 digs per set and 38 total blocks in 2013, while Anderson contributed 262 kills and 67 total blocks.

Bluffton University finished sixth in the standings last season with a 4-5 conference mark and a 16-19 record overall.  The Beavers ran the table in the HCAC tournament to earn the school's second tournament title.  Bluffton returns a pair of All-HCAC honorees from last season's title team.  Junior outside hitter Kendra Parmenter (Grove City, Ohio/H.S.) and junior middle hitter Jenny Brown (St. Marys, Ohio/Memorial) will look for similar production this fall.  Parmenter led the team with 384 kills and added 67 total blocks, while Brown added 314 kills, a team-high hitting percentage of .252, and a team-high 119 total blocks.

Mount St. Joseph University finished third in the league standings a year ago with a 7-2 conference record and held an overall mark of 16-17. The Lions graduated both of their All-HCAC selections from last season.  Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, Ind./East Central) earned a spot on the All-Freshman team last fall and will look to lead the Mount offense this season.  Wilgenbusch tallied 213 kills with 128 digs as a freshman.  Senior setter Janelle Davis (Convoy, Ohio/Wayne Trace) will look to pilot the offense after leading the team with 6.05 assists per set during the 2013 season.

The 2014 volleyball season is scheduled to open on August 29.
