INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The 2018 HCAC volleyball tournament will be held this week, October 31 and November 3-4. Wednesday's opening round games will be played on the campus of the high seed, while the semifinals and championship will be played at Transylvania University. The Pioneers claimed the school's first outright HCAC volleyball crown and earned the right to host the tournament.
Transylvania finished the season 14-10 overall and 8-1 in conference play, winning eight of their last 10 matches to end the season. Rose-Hulman (17-12, 7-2 HCAC) earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament, finishing one game behind the Pioneers.
Transylvania and Rose-Hulman earned a first-round bye after earning the top two seeds in the tournament and will play separate semifinal matches Saturday afternoon.
Action will get underway Wednesday evening as Hanover (15-13, 5-4 HCAC) earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Bluffton (13-14, 5-4 HCAC). The Beavers beat the Panthers 3-0 on September 29 in conference play. Hanover went 7-3 down the stretch, while Bluffton finished the season 5-5. The winner will advance on to play Transylvania at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky. The Pioneers defeated Hanover 3-2 on October 3rd before claiming a 3-1 victory over Bluffton on October 14th during the regular season.
Anderson (11-16, 3-6 HCAC), the No. 6 seed in the tourney, will take on No. 3 Earlham (19-12, 6-3 HCAC) in the second opening round game Wednesday. Back on October 20, the Quakers defeated the Ravens 3-1 on the road. Earlham went 7-3 in the last 10 matches, while Anderson finished the season 3-7. Rose-Hulman will play the victor between the Pioneers and Lions Saturday afternoon. The Fightin' Engineers defeated Anderson 3-0 on October 3rd. Rose-Hulman lost to Earlham 3-1 on October 24th in the regular season.
The championship match will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 1 p.m. The tournament champion will earn the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament that is slated to begin on Friday, November 9.
