Women's Cross Country Report (Week 1) - Franklin's Waterman Takes First Place
GREENWOOD, IN - Franklin College junior runner Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown)ran to a first place finish at the annual Sodexho Grizzly Invitational this past Saturday. Waterman captured first place among all individuals with a career-best time of 18:49.81 on the five-kilometer course.
The junior's time was the third best individual mark in meet history and the best by a Franklin contestent in the event. Her mark was also the third best among Franklin female cross country athletes all time.
Franklin finished second to Wilmington in the team standings, breaking a two-year streak of meet titles. The Quakers edged the Grizzlies by 14 points to claim the title.
Finishing behind Waterman in the top 10 for the Grizzlies were senior Kristi Brown (Muncie, Ind./Southside H.S.) and sophomore Shannon Egold (Cloverdale, Ind./South Putnam). Brown placed fourth with a career-best time of 19:40.91, while Egold finished seventh with a career-best mark of 19:50.81.
The Hanover women's team placed fourth at the Grizzly Invitational this past weekend. The Panthers were led by junior Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky./Catholic) who finished eighth in the event (20:20.68).
Anderson and Rose-Hulman competed at the Wabash Hokum Karem Saturday. The Engineers finished third in the event, while the Ravens placed fourth. Rose's Melissa Rogers (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) and Creasy Clauser (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) teamed for a third place finish in the event (23:08) to lead the Engineers.
Anderson's Candace DeLong (Anderson, Ind.) and Erica Moffitt (Wauconda, Ill.) finished sixth to pace the Ravens with a time of 24:20.
This weekend's schedule is highlighted by the Defiance and Hanover Invitational. Bluffton and Defiance will compete at Defiance, while Hanover and Franklin will battle in southern Indiana.
In other action, Manchester will travel to Bowling Green and Mount St. Joseph and Transylvania open the season at the Queen City Invitational.
