GREENWOOD, IN – Manchester College’s women’s cross country team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Spartans tallied 97 points and eight first place votes in a poll of the conference’s ten head coaches.

Hanover will look to dethrone the Spartans at the HCAC championships this fall, as the Panthers totaled a second-best 89 points and two first place votes.  Defiance College placed third in the poll with 83 points.  Franklin College finished fourth with 65 points and was followed by Anderson University (56 points), Transylvania University (52), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (47), Earlham College (31), Bluffton University (17), and College of Mount St. Joseph (13).

Manchester dominated the meet in 2010 to earn their second-straight HCAC cross country championship.  The Spartans totaled 25 points at the meet and held off second place Hanover by 50 points.  The black and gold are set to return two First-Team All-HCAC members from a year ago.  Juniors Meredith Cors (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) and Ashley Kopla (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) placed fifth and 11th overall at the meet last fall.  Brian Cashdollar’s squad also returns a trio of Honorable Mention selections that will strive to crack the top 12 this October.

Hanover will try and claim their first conference crown this fall after finishing second a year ago.  The Panthers return two First-Team All-HCAC runners from last season’s second place squad.  Senior’s Rachel Moreland (Lawton, Mich./H.S.) and Sara Lucas (Avon, Ind./H.S.) placed seventh and eighth overall and will once again look to lead the Panthers.

Defiance has been selected to finish third in 2011 after placing third last fall.  Sophomore Kate Busto (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and senior Ellen Stryffeler (Lisbon, Ohio/United Local) finished 15th and 17th overall last fall to earn Honorable Mention All-HCAC honors.  Busto and Stryffeler are the highest returning finishers for the Yellow Jackets this season.

The 2011 HCAC Women’s Cross Country Championship is set for Saturday, October 29.  The event will be hosted by Anderson University.

The 2011 women’s cross country season is set to begin on September 1.
