Manchester Women Earn Fourth Straight HCAC Cross Country Title

BLUFFTON, OH Manchester University’s women’s cross country team picked up its third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship on October 27 at the Bluffton University Nature Preserve. The Spartans posted a score of 42 to hold off second place Hanover (62 pts) in the team standings. Manchester placed four runners in the top ten of the individual standings to help pace the team. 

Leading the way for the Spartans was senior Karla Madrigal (Elkhart, Ind.).  Madrigal finished third overall, finishing the 6K course in a time of 23:41.8.  Franklin’s Hillary Cain (Rushville, Ind.) won the meet for the second consecutive year, posting a time of 22:49.9.  Cain was named HCAC Most Valuable Runner for her efforts.

Franklin placed third as a team with a score of 97 and was followed by Anderson (120), Rose-Hulman (136), Bluffton (149), Earlham (162), Defiance (235), Mount St. Joseph (238), and Transylvania (264).

Cain and Madrigal were recognized as All-HCAC after placing among the top 12 finishers.  Joining the duo were Manchester’s Brianna Martinez (Schererville, Ind.), Cayla Pusey (Ft. Wayne, Ind.), and Meredith Cors (Elkhart, Ind.), Franklin’s Anna Murdock (Trafalgar, Ind.), Hanover’s Mackenzie Dye (New Castle, Ind.) and Claire Hinshaw (New Castle, Ind.), Anderson’s Desiree Maran (Goshen, Ind.), Bluffton’s Alison Janzen (Whitewater, Kan.), Mount St. Joseph’s Amanda Shelby (West Chester, Ohio), and Rose-Hulman’s Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La.).

Mount St. Joseph’s Amanda Shelby was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year for her second place finish at the meet.  Shelby posted a time of 23:01.1.

Manchester head coach Brian Cashdollar was named HCAC Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading Manchester to the women’s title.
