Manchester Picked to Win Fifth-Straight HCAC Women’s Cross Country Title

GREENWOOD, IN – Manchester University’s women’s cross country team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Spartans tallied 97 points and eight first place votes in a poll of the conference’s ten head coaches.

Hanover College will look to dethrone the Spartans at the HCAC championships this fall, as the Panthers totaled a second-best 90 points and one first place vote.  Franklin College placed third in the poll with 83 points and the final first place vote.  Anderson University finished fourth with 69 points and was followed by Bluffton University (55 points), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (53), Earlham College (38), Defiance College (35), College of Mount St. Joseph (17), and Transylvania University (13).

Manchester earned its fourth-straight HCAC cross country championship in 2012.  The Spartans totaled 42 points at the meet and held off second place Hanover by 20 points.  The black and gold are set to return two First-Team All-HCAC members from a year ago.  Juniors Brianna Martinez (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) and Cayla Pusey (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia) placed sixth and eighth overall at the meet last fall.  Brian Cashdollar’s squad also returns one honorable mention selection that will strive to crack the top 12 this November.

Hanover College will try to claim its first conference crown since 2001 after finishing second a year ago.  The Panthers return two First-Team All-HCAC selections from last season’s team. Junior Mackenzie Dye (New Castle, Ind./H.S.) finished fifth overall last fall, while junior Claire Hinshaw (New Castle, Ind./H.S.) placed ninth.

Franklin College has been selected to finish third in 2013 after placing third last fall.  The Grizzlies return two-time HCAC MVP Hilary Cain (Rushville, Ind./H.S.) from last season’s third place squad.  Cain won the conference meet once again, finishing the course in a time of 22:49.90.  Junior Anna Murdock (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek) also earned First-Team All-HCAC honors with a fourth place finish at the championship meet.

The 2013 HCAC Women’s Cross Country Championship is set for Saturday, November 2 at Defiance College.

The 2013 women’s cross country season is set to begin on August 31.
