Hanover Picked to Win Third-Straight HCAC Women’s Cross Country Title

GREENWOOD, IN – Hanover College’s women’s cross country team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2015 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Panthers tallied 96 points and six first place votes in a poll of the conference’s ten head coaches.

Manchester University finished in a close second, collecting 94 points and four first place votes, while Franklin College placed third in the poll with 77 points.  Anderson University finished fourth with 71 points and was followed by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (61 points), Defiance College (44), Bluffton University (42), Earlham College (34), Mount St. Joseph University (17), and Transylvania University (14).

Hanover College earned its fifth HCAC cross country championship in 2013.  The Panthers totaled 35 points at the meet and held off second place Manchester by 27 points.  Hanover is set to return four first-team All-HCAC members from a year ago.  Senior Teresa Wiczynski (Columbus, Ind./East) led the Panthers with a fourth place finish.  Sophomore Mackenzie Dean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) finished seventh, while Rachel Smith (Brownsburg, Ind./H.S.) and junior Cami Trachtman (Carmel, Ind./H.S.) placed ninth and 11th at the meet.

Manchester University will try to claim its fifth conference crown after finishing second a year ago.  The Spartans return one first-team All-HCAC selection from last season’s team. Junior Mariah Jordan (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) led the Spartans with a third place finish, posting a time 14 seconds behind the meet champion.

Franklin College has been selected to finish third in 2015 after placing third last fall.  The Grizzlies return one first-team All-HCAC runner from last season’s third place squad and will look to replace HCAC MVP Anna Murdock.  Senior Ashley Myers (Edinburg, Ind./H.S.) earned the honor with an eighth place finish at the championship meet.

The 2015 HCAC Women’s Cross Country Championship will be hosted by Franklin College on Saturday, October 31.

The 2015 women’s cross country season is set to begin on September 1.
